Rowden Payne has been hit, both literally and figuratively. As the son of a duke, and being disowned by his father, Rowden makes his way as he wants. As a pugilist. He works the mills (places that hold boxing matches) to earn income. At one fight a woman appears, and Rowden is distracted enough to be knocked down.

Modesty Brown is just as the name says, modest by dress and modest by nature. When her father disappears and she looks for him, she finds she really isn’t as modest as she appears, or thought she was. Modesty needs to find her father as he is all she has, but when she finally finds him, she finds a whole other side to him she had no idea about. He is not the strict evangelical pastor he proports to be.

Modesty learns much about herself and her beginnings while she searches for her father. Rowden is drawn to Modesty and assists her when he is not preparing for his big bout. Then she is in danger and Rowden and his friends ensure her safety.

I have really enjoyed this series, but I was a little disappointed with this story. It wasn’t the storyline as I thought it was really unique and interesting. There were some interesting secondary characters including Chibale Okora and Therese who have their own story within the story. I think I really wanted the chemistry between Rowden and Modesty to leap off the page, but it was a more sedate pace. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this read.
