Jensen Kittredge has been found out. His exterior is meant to show he is lazy and a risk taker. He is a fire jumper, one who jumps into the wildfires, taking lots of risks with his life. He really enjoys sex. He doesn’t like long relationships. Then Harriet Barnett turns up. She won him in a raffle at the Harvest Gala. And Jensen is intrigued by the straight-laced school teacher turning up in the bar where he is usually stationed. However, Harriet wants Jensen for a different purpose.

Jensen doesn’t want to talk to a bunch of teenagers, but Harriet makes it seem like an interesting prospect. He does as she asks and then turns up at her home and finds the stereotypical cat lady. They spend the night and Jensen wants more one nights with her. But no relationship. It is when his family become involved, and his reluctance to leave Harriet alone, that things seem to escalate when she goes home to her parents for thinking time.

Harriet has always been her own woman. She is very stubborn according to her parents and they just let her do what she needed to do, but must have had a reason behind it. Harriet has always seen herself as odd. When she starts seeing Jensen, then has that important talk with her parents, she realises that she isn’t as odd as she thinks, and then softens as she understands more about herself.

The reader still gets to glimpse other members of the Kittredge family and I suspect there are still some family secrets to be revealed in future stories. And while it seems that Jensen and Harriet seem like such opposites, particularly in appearance and attitude to relationships, they are suited. Another great read in this series by Ms Crews.
