Author spotlight: Allison Butler

18 September 2021

In the lead-up to ARR2021 in December we will be spotlighting the authors who will be signing. In the spotlight today we have Allison Butler.

Who was the first romance author to catch your interest?

Judith McNaught’s novel Whitney, My Love was the first romance I read, but it was Catherine Anderson’s Simply Love that made me fall in love with romance stories and inspired me to write my own.

What do you write?

I write historical fiction set in medieval Scotland. My books are all written in third person, are linked by characters and are standalone, but it’s a bonus to read them in order of release.

Which usually comes to you first—characters or plot (or something else)?

My characters typically come to me first. The heroine in my current work-in-progress is a secondary character from The Saint, book 3 of my Highland Brides, so I have a hint of who she is already. But an historical event is shaping who my hero is and what he truly wants and needs.

Choose one of your books to turn into a movie—who would you cast in the lead roles?

This was a tough question. I have pictures in my head for each hero and heroine for every book, because I need to know what they look like while I write their story. In the end I’ve chosen The Protector and would cast Kit Harrington as Duff and Blake Lively as Mairi Gordon.

Tell us about your latest release in 100 words or less:

The Thief is my latest print release. Laird Lachlan Elliot vowed to honour his father’s dying wish to marry and sire an heir, but due to a family secret, Lachlan is determined his marriage will be one of convenience only. Born the second daughter to a man of power, a man desperate for a son, Kenzie Irvine has forged a life for herself and has grown into a feisty, strong-willed woman. The last thing she wants, or needs, is to be caught stealing from the neighbouring laird, Lachlan Elliot, who gives her the choice to either marry him or hang.

What else are you working on in 2021?

Sorcha Kennedy first showed up when she aided her friend Isla Beaton in The Saint. She’s caring and daring and deserves a happily ever after of her own. Sorcha is the only child of Aberdeen’s widowed commander of the guards and has been betrothed to a stranger from Kildrummy Castle since she was eight years old. She’s never met him or even seen him and isn’t happy about the arrangement, but what’s most annoying is Hugh Gowan was supposed to come for her and marry her nigh on a year ago.
