Author spotlight: Amber Jakeman

In the lead-up to ARR2021 in December we will be spotlighting the authors who will be signing. In the spotlight today we have Amber Jakeman.

Who was the first romance author to catch your interest?

Probably Di Morrissey or Monica McInerney, though the romantic subplot in just about anything always makes me sigh or cry, and anything with an uplifting ending gets my vote.

What do you write?

I love to write feel-good fiction—international heart-warmers, on the sweeter side. My House of Jewels series is contemporary, but I’m also partial to writing historicals (love the research! I have to be hunted out of the library…) I’m currently writing a lot of third person, dual point of view, which offers so much insight into motivation and misunderstandings. 🙂

Which usually comes to you first—characters or plot (or something else)?

I think the characters come first. Once you have two interesting characters, you put them together and whammo!

Choose one of your books to turn into a movie—who would you cast in the lead roles?

I’d love to see Chris Hemsworth play bad boy Will Huntley as he falls for his gambling addiction therapist Elizabeth Debicki in House of Hearts!

Tell us about your latest release in 100 words or less:

House of Spades explores whether love can blaze later in life.

Free spirit Flame Rhys has sworn off love, but try convincing her reclusive neighbor Ross Archer.

In the beautiful Byron Bay hinterland, serial single Flame calls Ross a “hermit” while he accuses her of trespassing.

When the fiery redhead roasts Ross for stealing her caravan, she accidentally rekindles the widower’s passion for life, for his land and for love.

But how can he convince her to stay with him, when every other lover has let her down? And does Flame harbour a dark secret, as Ross’s daughters suspect?

What else are you working on in 2021?

I’m just finishing the first draft of House of Clubs, set in France, and after that will come Full House. The House of Jewels series follows the romantic fortunes of the extended Huntley family whose jewellery business is based in Australia.
