Book #2 in The Culhanes of Cedar River follows immediately on—in fact overlaps with #1 (When You Least Expect It). If you dive in here first, Helen Lacey does explain the family to you, and it can be read stand alone. But … why would you want to miss out?

Jake Culhane is back. He left Cedar River and enlisted as soon as he could, driven by the need to redefine himself away from his (then) difficult family. He is a beloved brother in the family fold, but it’s taken years for him to be able to return—and it’s still a temporary visit. He is now a self-made businessman specialising in security, a millionaire in his own right. But also still guarded, still self-isolated, unable to communicate well apart from business. The family reels him in wholeheartedly, loving him despite his diffident attitude.

Jake’s childhood sweetheart Abby Perkins is also very surprised to see him return. She never thought he would. She watched her own family fall apart when her father became a statistic in war. She wasn’t about to become an army wife and fall apart like her mother when the inevitable happened, so when Jake enlisted, she said she wasn’t going to follow him. That sort of life was not for her.

But on a tumultuous and very emotional trip home six years previously, Abby and Jake had one passionate night together, and she conceived. Jake is completely unaware he has a son. Abby was convinced he would never return, so she has brought her son up in Cedar River—in plain view of all the Culhanes. He looks like Jake and has inherited some very unique traits. Anyone with eyes to see could guess at his parentage, but they haven’t so far. Or if they have, they’ve kept it to themselves. The story about the how and why this hasn’t happened is a bit complicated and in itself rather tragic.

Until Jake comes home. Then Abby realises she must disclose the truth regarding TJ’s parentage. But can she—and will she? And is Jake ready to hear all the reasons why she has withheld this incredible gift for so long? As you can imagine, this becomes a very difficult and highly emotional path to tread.

All the feels, wow!
