Author spotlight: Maddison Michaels

13 February 2020

For ARR2020 in March we will be featuring more than 90 romance authors across five cities. If you live in (or near) Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Adelaide, come along and meet local authors, as well as our international guests—Darynda Jones and Susan Donovan.

Today we are spotlighting Maddison Michaels. She will be attending ARR2020 in Sydney.

How old were you when you first started writing romance?

Eighteen, though I kept starting and stopping several different stories, and I didn’t actually end up finishing a novel until I was 32 years old!

Who was the first romance author to catch your interest?

The first historical romance I read was by Amanda Quick, and I adored it! So much so that I devoured all of her books and then moved on to some other amazing authors: Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Sabrina Jefferies and Lisa Kleypas, to name just a few.

Have you written genres other than romance (or are you thinking about it)?

I’m contracted for another three historical romances, but after I finish writing those I’m looking at switching up to writing suspense thrillers.

Choose one of your books to turn into a movie—who would you cast in the lead roles?

The Sinful Scot but that’s a hard one, as my characters come from my own head, so it’s difficult to picture others in their roles, lol. But I’d look at casting Gerard Butler as Alec and maybe Malin Ackerman?

What is the hardest part of creating a story?

It depends on each story to be honest. For me, I love the plotting stage so creating a story is fun.

What is your favourite place to write?

My writing room—I adore it!

Have any of your characters been inspired by real-life people?

Nope, but who knows in the future … lol.

What was the last romance you read and loved (and why did you love it)?

Actually I just re-read Bec McMaster’s Kiss of Steel and loved it all over again! The characters were so full of life and personality, and the chemistry between the main characters was sizzling!!

Tell us about your latest release in 100 words or less

The Sinful Scot. Constance Campbell, the Duchess of Kilmaine, once believed that all she needed in life was a duke. But everything unravelled when she realised her perfect husband was a perfect monster. Now broken beyond repair, she hides her misery behind a perfect Society mask … even from her childhood friend, Alec. But when the Duke of Kilmaine is murdered in cold blood, with Connie sleeping right next to him in bed, Alec and Connie must set out on the run together. Finally unencumbered, Connie feels a freedom she only ever dreamed about, and an unexpected attraction to the man who is keeping her safe. But even if they can win her freedom and clear her name, could she ever open her heart up to someone again?

What else will you be working on in 2020?

Actually, a lot! I’ve started an new historical romance suspense series, which will be three books—and they’re all due to my publisher at various points through the year—so it’s going to be a busy 2020 for me!
