Author spotlight: Shona Husk

14 December 2019

For ARR2020 in March we will be featuring more than 90 romance authors across five cities. If you live in (or near) Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Adelaide, come along and meet local authors, as well as our international guests—Darynda Jones and Susan Donovan.

Today we are spotlighting Shona Husk. She will be attending ARR2020 in Perth.

How old were you when you first started writing romance?

I was late twenties when I started writing romance, but I’d written fantasy as a child/young teen before stopping to focus on school work.

Who was the first romance author to catch your interest?

Susan Sizemore and her vampires.

Have you written genres other than romance (or are you thinking about it)?

Yes, I also write urban fantasy.

Choose one of your books to turn into a movie—who would you cast in the lead roles?

I’d love to see any of my books as a movie 😉 As for casting I have no idea. I don’t do that when I’m plotting and I know that in reality there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes when it comes to casting (everything from name, to availability and cost).

What is the hardest part of creating a story?

I love creating new worlds and characters. What I need is more time to write.

What is your favourite place to write?

Somewhere I don’t get interrupted!

Have any of your characters been inspired by real-life people?

No. My stories are usually a tangle of ideas drawn from research, history, science or something I read.

What was the last romance you read and loved (and why did you love it)?

Undaunted by Leah Ashton. It was a great romantic suspense set in Perth. I loved seeing local landmarks in the story.

Tell us about your latest release in 100 words or less

Mercenary Ethics is a sci-fi survival romance set on a dead planet where weapons testing occurs. There’s action, fighting, zombies and desperate sexy times. Left for dead on a forgotten planet by his enemies, he’ll do anything to escape, including team up with the scientist who held a knife to his throat.

What else will you be working on in 2020?

I’ll be writing another Obsidian Rim book (sci-fi action romance) and another cryptid romantic suspense, as well as a new adult Christmas story in the Rainbow Cove series for Escape publishing.
