She has loved him for five years. She needs to stop pining for him.

Brody Girvan is Laird of Invermackie. He is well known among the ladies in Edinburgh. This Christmas gathering has Brody thinking about his future and how he doesn’t really like to be the life of the party anymore. Even his friends have noticed how subdued he has become. He then realises he has feelings for his best friend’s sister, Elspeth.

Elspeth Douglas is considered the quiet one in her family. She has the dark hair and is not slender like her sisters or her well known mother. And she prefers the shadows. She wears the drab clothing, and many think she is malleable, but she has a stubborn streak. Christmas is at Fergus Mackinnon’s castle and Elspeth hopes to get through it. Then Marina, Fergus’s wife, helps Elspeth with a makeover, and life changes dramatically for Elspeth, for better and for worse. For Elspeth it is worse before it gets better.

The journey for Brody and Elspeth is somewhat rocky. They start to sneak around but are then caught, and Brody proposes. He is surprised when Elspeth refuses him as she believes they were not doing anything wrong. After much discussion between the various parties, Elspeth and Brody have their HEA.

I’m not sure I can come up with enough synonyms to describe Ms Campbell’s stories. They are always delightful, the characters somewhat cheeky, and have interesting twists. I’m enjoying the Laird’s series and this story was no exception.
