Author spotlight: Cathleen Ross

4 March 2019

We’re featuring a wide range of Australian authors participating in ARR2019 in venues across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Today we’re having Elevenses with Cathleen Ross, author of 15 romances in the genres of erotic romance. She will be attending ARR2019 in Sydney.

When did you first realise you wanted to be an author?

From the time I was a teenager, I wanted to write for Harlequin Mills & Boon.

Why romance and not a different genre?

I always wanted to write romance and I still do. It’s the genre I read most of the time.

What was the first romance you read and why did you love it?

I know technically it’s not a romance, but I love Gone with the Wind.

What is the single most important characteristic for an aspiring author wanting to be a published writer?

I think you have to write everyday to perfect your craft and have incredible persistence and tenacity. It also helps to learn to self-publish to become a hybrid author.

What is your favourite part of creating a story?

Character creation

What is your best tip for fighting writer’s block/writer’s fear?

I don’t get it. I never shut up.

Pick a favourite (bold your preference)

  • series or stand-alone?
  • ebook, paperback or hardcover?
  • first person or third?

Who has been an inspiration to you, in life or your writing career?

Kandy Shepherd, DB Tait, Lizzie Chandler, Christina Phillips, Mel Teshco. I can’t pick one but these are my go-to people.

Tell us about your latest release in 100 words or less

My current release is Snatched. In April 2019 Rough and Ready comes out. It is about an ex-soldier who worries he won’t be able to return to his country and fit in. He’s been on the move for 10 years, had a very unhappy home life, and doesn’t feel he can create a home for himself. My heroine is a nurse who comes from a bad family and wants to create a happy home without the unwanted drama that seems to pervade her life. This book is about falling in love between opposites.

What else will you be working on in 2019?

I’ve been writing an odd book about Australia’s fist cult. I still need to polish it. I’m also contracted to start the Scottish Lords and Ladies books for Entangled.

Please recommend an Aussie romance you read recently

Stranded with her Greek Tycoon is one of my favourite recent reads by Kandy Shepherd.
