Author spotlight: Ann B Harrison

11 January 2019

We’re featuring a wide range of Australian authors participating in ARR2019 in venues across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Today we’re having Elevenses with Ann B Harrison, author of 30 odd titles. She will be attending ARR2019 in Sydney.

When did you first realise you wanted to be an author?

It wasn’t until about ten years ago that I got an idea that wouldn’t leave me alone. A friend told me to write it down and that became Taming the Outback, my first book release.

Why romance and not a different genre?

I love love. Simple as that.

What was the first romance you read and why did you love it?

It was probably a Barbara Cartland book. I read everything she wrote, and I think I overdid it. I never wanted to write Regency, though, for some reason. I just needed to read it.

What is the single most important characteristic for an aspiring author wanting to be a published writer?

What is your favourite part of creating a story?

Character creation

What is your best tip for fighting writer’s block/writer’s fear?

I don’t believe in writers block, sorry. Just because that chapter or paragraph isn’t jumping out at you doesn’t mean you can’t put your bum in your chair and write something. Just get the words down and don’t stress over it. You’ll be surprised how ‘writing yourself into a story’ can actually work when you think you’ve lost it.

Pick a favourite (bold your preference)

  • series or stand-alone?
  • ebook, paperback or hardcover? Sorry, can’t choose. I buy my fave authors in print and read them over and over.
  • first person or third?

Who has been an inspiration to you, in life or your writing career?

Nora Roberts. Can’t go past her for tenacity and drive. A single mom who had it a lot tougher than we do today. With the self-publishing world taking such leaps forward, the world is our oyster. We don’t have to fight for a publishing contract like she did, if that’s not where we want to be. Our options are endless.

Tell us about your latest release in 100 words or less

Cowboy to the Rescue, Hansen Brothers book 1, is out 29 January. Jethro Hansen has never done the right thing as far as attitude is concerned. Used to drinking and fighting, his reputation is in ruins. When a routine visit to his lawyer goes bad, he’s the first to stand up and help. Sadie St Martin is only in Marietta to help out her old boss while she’s on maternity leave. Getting sucked into the small town wasn’t on her radar, nor was falling for the cute cowboy she’s supposed to guide as he mends his ways. Sometimes love has a mind of its own and the best-laid plans never go the way they should.

What else will you be working on in 2019?

I have two more Hansen Brothers stories releasing in March and May, as well as more in my Coopers Crossing Colorado series, and Hope Harbor will get a few more titles in 2019. I head to Texas and Hawaii in May for a family wedding and research for a new series I want to do, which is more in the suspense line. My calendar is pretty full!

Please recommend an Aussie romance you read recently

I’ve just loaded a box set to my Kindle called Outback Hearts. It’s by a group of Aussie authors, including yours truly. You can find it here.
