Author spotlight: Ash Hosking

4 January 2019

We’re featuring a wide range of Australian authors participating in ARR2019 next year in venues across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Today we’re having Elevenses with Ash Hosking, author of four romances in the genres of contemporary, new adult and comedy. She will be attending ARR2019 in Sydney.

When did you first realise you wanted to be an author?

I’ve actually written stories before I could properly write. I always used to create my own little worlds for fun, but I seriously put in the effort to finish a story and follow through to publishing it in 2015.

Why romance and not a different genre?

I don’t know, really, it’s just what comes to me freely. There’s nothing like getting swept up in a good romance. I love the trials and tribulations and character growth that can happen just by two people knowing each other.

What was the first romance you read and why did you love it?

Apart from the Disney fairy tales, the first one I can recall is The Princess Bride, when I was a teenager. What wasn’t there to love about a handsome young man battling evil in a mythical kingdom to save and be reunited with his one true love?

What is the single most important characteristic for an aspiring author wanting to be a published writer?

Patience, quickly followed by dedication.

What is your favourite part of creating a story?

Plotting

What is your best tip for fighting writer’s block/writer’s fear?

Try not to stress about it; the more you stress or try to force it the worse it becomes; and try not to wallow. Take a break. Get some fresh air, do something that’s a little luxury just for you, like take a bath or whatever you may be into.

Pick a favourite (bold your preference)

  • series or stand-alone?
  • ebook, paperback or hardcover?
  • first person or third?

Who has been an inspiration to you, in life or your writing career?

JK Rowling. That woman is a queen. She never gave up no matter how many rejection letters she received, because she believed in the world she had created. And look at her now! Plus I admire how she isn’t afraid to voice her opinion on things that matter.

Tell us about your latest release in 100 words or less

Indy is a contemporary romance about a feisty, talented tattoo artist who meets her rock star celebrity crush and how their worlds collide.

What else will you be working on in 2019?

A lot! I’ll be finishing Indy Part 2, plus the next in the Ladies of Ink series, Ivy. Also finishing another instalment of The Missing Pieces series, Drive Me Wild, Birthday Wishes, a sweet, second chance/country romance, and an as yet untitled rom-com.

Please recommend an Aussie romance you read recently

I LOVED Cake by Carmen Jenner.
