Weekly musing: urban fantasy romances

12 July 2018

This week’s discussion is urban fantasy.

Urban fantasy is usually set in a contempary setting with supernatural and/or magical elements. The core conflict revolves around something else rather than the romance; think a paranormal story with strong romantic elements. The world will also be more likely set in the real world rather than a fantasy/imaginary setting. They also have the same heroine and/or hero throughout the series.

The majority of the urban fantasy novels I’ve read are in the first-person narrative. They will also feature many supernatural characters such as vampires, shapeshifters, demons, Fae and witches. Do you have any favourite urban fantasy romances?

Common elements found in urban fantasy are high levels of suspense, action, mystery or humour. My favourite tropes for this genre are: mistaken identity, revenge and forbidden love. What are your favourite urban fantasy tropes?
