Weekly musing: non-fiction

3 May 2018

This week I’m stepping away slightly from traditional romance reading and exploring the non-fiction side of romance novels.

So for this post, non-fiction means that the book will either look into the world of a particular romance novelist, or be about the genre itself.

Exploring an author’s world I have read these two books:

Georgette Heyer’s Regency World by Jennifer Kloester

The World of Stephanie Laurens by Stephanie Laurens

I know there are many worlds that authors have created that I would love a handbook for. (Nalini Singh I’m looking at you!)

I really enjoyed Georgette Heyer’s Regency World, as it gave a really detailed insight into the Regency period. When I thought I could write a Regency-set novel this was a fantastic resource that explained nearly everything about that time period.

I have found these interesting reads about the romance genre itself:

Everything I Know about Love, I Learned from Romance Novels by Sarah Wendell

Beyond Heaving Bosoms: the Smart Bitches’ Guide to Romance Novels by Sarah Wendell and Candy Tan

Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women: Romance Writes of the Appeal of the Romance by Jayne Ann Krentz

A Natural History of the Romance Novel by Pamela Regis

Reading the Romance: Women, Patriarchy and Popular Literature by Janice A Radway

Dangerous Books for Girls: the Bad Reputation of Romance Novels Explained by Maya Rodale

Have you read any of these types of books? Is this something that you would read? Do you have any reading recommendations?

Happy reading!

Suzi Love is a huge fan of the Regency world, and, as well writing fiction romances, has several books about this era.

I can’t believe I forgot Suzi Love! I discovered her books at my first ARRA convention back in 2015! Thanks for the reminder, adding her to my list now!
