Weekly musing: new adult romance

8 March 2018

This week I’m going to talk about my favourite and newest breakout subgenre: new adult. This spunky new genre has burst onto the scene filling a void we did not know we needed. The main characters in this category are in their early twenties (18–25), thus breaking away from young adult and mainstream romances. This subgenre really speaks to me; mainly I think because I’ve only just recently passed its target audience (or so I like to think).

New adult makes the characters deal with coming of age problems such as living away from home for the first time, starting college and getting a first job and financial independance. It’s a lot firsts. However they will not shy away from tackling tough issues like depression, suicide and drug and alcohol abuse. Basically dealing with new beginnings of adulthood that you don’t see in young adult and mainstream romance.

Common tropes and elements are: accidental pregnancies, love at first sight and unrequitted love. Which tropes do you like/hate to read about in new adult romances?

My favourite authors are: Kylie Scott, Jay Crownover, Cora Carmack, Abbi Glines and Colleen Hoover. Who are your favourite new adult authors?

My top 10 must-read new adult romances:

  • Rule by Jay Crownover (#1 Marked Men series)
  • Fallen Too Far by Abbi Glines (#1 Rosemary Beach series)
  • Losing It by Cora Carmack (#1 Losing It series)
  • Hopeless by Colleen Hoover (#1 Hopeless series)
  • 3:AM Kisses by Addison Moore (#1 3:AM Kisses series)
  • The Boys of Summer by CJ Duggan (#1 Summer series)
  • Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire (#1 Disaster series)
  • The Year of Luminous Love by Lurlene McDaniel (#1 The Year series)
