Weekly musing: contemporary Western romance

22 February 2018

This week’s discussion is Western (contemporary) romance. Think romances set in America’s West featuring cowboys, ranchers, rodeo riders, sherrifs, deputies and Texas Rangers.

A lot of Western romances will feature family dramas and strong family ties. The hero is sexy with a strong and rugged look; looking fantastic in skin-tight, bum-hugging wranglers and cowboy boots … Sorry I may have drifted off into my own daydreams there. Okay back on track. Sexy cowboys …

Their heroines are sassy, intelligent and capable of looking after themselves. Usually the heroine will have ties to the country as well, but occasionally she will be a city girl, which always ends up with fantastic results. Especially if they are trying to keep their high heels clean. Love those fish-out-water tropes sometimes.

Other common tropes and elements you’ll find in this subgenre are: second chance at love, redemption, reformed player, secret baby/pregnancy and occasionally the marriage of convenience or fake engagements. Which tropes do you like to read in contemporary Westerns, and which ones do you hate?

My favourite contemporary Western authors are: Carla Neggers, Katie Lane and Lori Wilde. Lori Wilde always has fantastic covers for her novels; absolutely mouth-watering! Who are your favourite contemporary Western romance authors?

My top 10 must-read contemporary Western romances are:

  • Big Sky Country by Linda Lael Miller (Parable, Montana #1)
  • Montana Sky by Nora Roberts
  • Love at First Sight by Lori Wilde (Cupid, Texas #1)
  • Billion Dollar Cowboy by Carolyn Brown (Cowboys & Brides #1)
  • Kentucky Home by Sarah Title (Southern Comfort #1)
  • One Night With a Cowboy by Cat Johnson (Oklahoma Nights #1)
  • Going Cowboy Crazy by Katie Lane (Deep in the Heart of Texas #1)
  • Loving Cara by Kristen Proby (Love Under the Big Sky #1)
  • Summer at Mustang Ridge by Jesse Hayworth (Mustang Ridge #1)
  • How to Wrangle a Cowboy by Joanne Kennedy (Cowboys of Decker Ranch #3)

What books do you recommend as must-read contemporary Western romances?

My top five favourite covers:

Happy reading!

I used to read a lot of western romances once back in the day they were historical and I loved them, I haven’t read one for a long time although Karen Rock has a series on cowboys and ranches at the moment that I am really enjoying 🙂

    Have Fun

    I recommend.
Reckless In Texas, Tangled In Texas, Tougher In Texas by Kari Lynn Dell.
Christmas Rodeo 5 Book series by Shanna Hatfield.
These 2 ladies are the only authors I’ve found who know how to capture the true Rodeo world. As a Rodeo girl myself, I highly recommend them and the romance is phenomenal.
