Release day: Leaving Ocean Road

25 July 2017

Today is the official release of Leaving Ocean Road by Esther Campion (ebook and paperback, Hachette Australia). Here’s the blurb:

God damn it, Gerry Clancy, couldn’t you have left well enough alone and stayed in Cork?

Twenty years ago, Ellen Constantinopoulos left her beloved Ireland to make a new life in Australia. She is now a popular local in a small coastal town, but struggling to cope with the death of her much-loved Greek husband, Nick. Ellen finds her world turned upside down when an unexpected visitor lands on her doorstep. The arrival of Gerry Clancy, her first love from Ireland, may just be the catalyst that pulls Ellen out of her pit of grief, but it will also trigger a whole new set of complications for her and those she holds dear.

Home is where the heart is – but where exactly is home? Can Ellen and Gerry’s rekindled romance withstand the passage of time, family, young-adult children with their own lives, and the shock disclosure of a long-held secret that will put all their closest relationships at risk?

Set in Ireland, Greece and small-town coastal Australia, Leaving Ocean Road is a poignant story about treasuring our memories while celebrating our new beginnings, from wonderful new storyteller Esther Campion.

Esther dropped by today to tell us a little about this book:

We were driving around Keith in South Australia behind a trailer loaded up with a rusty old Chevy truck that put me in mind of one of my favourite books, The Bridges of Madison County. A novelist in my writing group at the time always told us to write the book we would like to read, so I came up with the idea of an Irish woman in Australia who was recently widowed after the death of her handsome Greek husband who had left behind a beautiful vintage car. Then I started re-reading old letters I have from my husband from our early days when we spent months apart when he lived in Greece and also letters from an old Irish friend. I asked myself a few what ifs about how life might turn out if we made different choices when we were young and Leaving Ocean Road began to take shape.

You can find out more about this book at Esther’s facebook page or buy it from Hachette.

The publisher has provided three copies of this book to give away to ARRA members. To go in the draw, simply comment on this post. (The giveaway is now closed. The winners were Pamela007, Lyn Williams and Jaykkay.)
