Feature book: Winning Lord West
Winning Lord West by Anna Campbell
Helena is the last of the Dashing Widows to fall but it will take a special person to make her do so.
Helena, Lady Crewe, had a disastrous marriage. She hated her husband as he treated her badly. He wooed her, then the relationship failed, as did her husband in the bedroom. She really doesn’t want another husband. Then Lord West re-appears in her life.
Vernon Grange missed his opportunity when they were younger when his friend proposed to Helena first and all was lost. Lord West regrets that he was unable to win her over, but now she is a widow he needs to show her that he wants her. Lord West has much work to do to gain Helena’s trust as she thinks he is a rake. Vernon has to convince her that he has changed and can be the man she needs.
As part of his plan, he gives her his horse to care for until he returns from his diplomatic trip to Russia. Vernon returns but falls ill. Helena becomes concerned at his illness and the pair decide to have a discreet liaison during their time in the country where they will attend the wedding of her brother.
There is much banter between the pair as they try to hide their liaison from everyone, but those close applaud their relationship. Helena and Vernon do realise fairly quickly that they were meant to be.
I have really enjoyed the Dashing Widows series. The stories are quick but show the depth that is needed for the couple to find that they cannot live without their other half. In the epilogue to this story, we do get to see how things have turned out for all three couples. This is another great story by Ms Campbell.
