Feature book: Naked
I really enjoy a good historical, and this one is very good with so much history and a very sensual romance between Lady Godiva and her husband Lord Leofric. Yes, we have all surely heard of Lady Godiva and her ride through the streets of Coventry naked with only her hair covering her, but this story takes us further into her life and her journey to a HEA with her husband, and with it, the troubles and danger that abound in this era.
This story pulled me in from the first page. We get to meet the strong and honourable Godiva, loving daughter to the fair and just rulers of Coventry. Godiva is loved by her parents and the people. She is an only child and is taught a lot by both parents. Her father also teaches her to use a sword. The times they live in are hard with invasions by the Danes happening often, so she must be prepared to look after herself and her people, if need be. Tragedy strikes and Godiva becomes the ruler. She is prepared to rule fairly and on her own, but when Lord Leofric arrives, they go off to fight the Danes with her lifelong friend Edmund at her back. Leofric and Godiva win this one, and Lord Leofric asks for her hand in marriage. She must choose either the Lord or her lifelong friend Edmund, who it has been thought she would marry. She needs to choose not only for herself but for the people, so she chooses Lord Leofric.
Leofric has had a lot of tragedy in his life. He has lost his parents and has lost his eldest brother as well. He has the care of his siblings and is empowered with trying to regain his lands. He comes across as surly but strong, but there are reasons for this. Now that he has defeated the Danes, is ruler of Mercia and is marrying Lady Godiva, he has Coventry as well. Although Godiva will not part with her lands, they decide on a pact. As to ruling them, Godiva is always protective of her people because they love her dearly.
This is a beautiful story, rich in history. The romance and pull between Godiva and Leofric in the bedroom is strong. While there is not much speaking, their passion sparks. And when Lady Godiva’s life is in danger, Leofric is there to protect her. When they argue over taxes and Godiva stands her ground, riding naked through the streets, their love for each other is acknowledged with joy and a future that will bring smiles to them both, the people of Coventry and Mercia.
This is a wonderful story that I highly recommend for all historical buffs. It brings the characters to life, where they show the strength and passion for not only each other but their lands, the people they govern and what is just and fair. Don’t miss it.
