This week we are talking about…

Concurrent session 5D—Romancing the stars: action adventure in the last frontier

Most sci-fi romance is set on another world and involves an adventure, whether the heroine willingly sets out on that adventure or is shanghaied.

These four ladies of the stars will discuss the types of adventures they like to put their heroes and heroines through, the locations (planets, spaceships, other dimensions) they give them for their adventures and whether any popular culture Sci-fi icons have been inspirations for their characters.

The panellists

Since Angela Verdenius began writing in 2000, she has published 31 sci-fi and contemporary romances, as well as several novellas and short stories. Her books have received various top reviews, including the Golden Rose Award, as well as having the honour of being a finalist in the 2011 ARR Awards. Angela lives in Geraldton, WA, where she is ruled by her cats, and reads and watches way too much horror.

Erica Hayes was first published in 2009. She writes dark, gritty paranormal romance and urban fantasy, as well as romantic science fiction. Her books, including her Shadowfae Chronicles and Seven Signs series, have been ARR Award finalists every year from 2008 to 2013. Her latest urban fantasy series, beginning with Scorched, features a kick-butt super-powered heroine. Erica also has a secret identity, who writes edgy Victorian-era electricpunk/romantic murder mystery. She (and possibly the secret identity, too) lives in Canberra.

SE Gilchrist lives in the Hunter Valley, Australia and has had over ten books published since December 2012. Her stories are set in the exciting worlds of science fiction, ancient history, post-apocalyptic and contemporary rural romance. She is keenly interested in the environment, animal welfare, bush walking and zumba. Several of her books have finalled in writing contests and she is currently writing a NA apocalyptic story and a new science fiction romance series.

Valerie Parv, Australia’s queen of romance, has published 86 books, including nonfiction, selling more than 30 million copies in 26 languages. In recent years she has ventured into science-fiction romance with her Beacons series of ebooks published by Corvallis Press, USA, starting with Birthright and Earthbound (2014), with Homeworld and two related novellas in the series. She is an in-demand presenter of masterclasses and popular speaker, including at Romance Writers of America national conference and RT Book Reviews, New York, and is represented by The Tate Gallery, Sydney.
