This week we are talking about…

Concurrent session 4D—A touch of magic

Ro-magic (or magical realism) has snuck into romance in recent years and is now becoming more and more popular. But how did this subgenre, involving elements of magic in otherwise contemporary romance, evolve? In this session, we’ll be exploring how magic can lurk amongst the humdrum of everyday, making for sparkling romance with a touch of humour. In this subgenre, good witches mingle with ghosts, genies and fairies. Heroines may have a psychic ability or spontaneously time travel to the past or future. There may be a body switch or two, but a guardian angel can often be found to ensure the hero and heroine find each other. Let your mind wander to the possibility that someone or something might be guiding the path to true love…

Authors Jane Tara, Dani Kristoff and Jennifer Brassel will discuss the elements of magical realism they add to their romance. Prepare to be spellbound as we travel into the past, present and future of this subgenre. How much magic is just enough before the spell turns into paranormal romance? What elements constitute ro-magic and how is it marketed to the reader? Is ro-magic the next big thing?

Listen to your guardian angel and join us as we cast a spell over romance.

The panellists

CS4dDani Kristoff is a Canberra-based author, who delights in reading and writing paranormal romance. She’s been writing since late 2000, which means 13 years, although she’s been concentrating her efforts on science fiction, fantasy and horror. She’s completed a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Canberra. Her day job is in the public service. Her partner is also a writer and they get up to geekery where possible. Her paranormal romance books include Bespelled, published by Escape and The Sorcerer’s Spell published by VoyagerImpulse.

Jane Tara is the author of The Happy Endings Book Club, as well as three novels in the Shakespeare Sisters series, all published by Momentum. When not writing romance, she writes children’s books and has over two dozen published. She’s a wanderer at heart. She has lived in six countries and travelled everywhere in-between. She turned her itchy feet into Itchee Feet, a boutique publishing company that produces travel books for kids. Jane lives in beautiful Bondi with her partner Dominique and their four sons.

Hailing from inner-west Sydney, Jennifer Brassel was first published in 2000 but has been writing since the early 90s. A touch psychic, her magical reality novel Secret Reflection (Harlequin Escape) was a 2013 ARRA finalist. That was followed by a reincarnation story, The Curse. Jennifer also wrote YA Coins of Power (Parker Publishing USA) and historical fiction set in ancient times, as well as novellas in TWC Press anthologies Moonlit Encounters and Timeless Encounters.
