Book-signing event in Fremantle
This year the Romance Writers of Australia conference was held in Western Australia for the very first time. For ARRA that meant we were able to holding a book-signing event on the west coast. We were very excited at the opportunity.
The signing took place on 17 August at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. Along with all our favourite Aussie authors we were able to host a number of local WA authors at their very first signing. And we were also thrilled to welcome nine international romance authors–Julia Quinn, Carole Mortimer, Nina Bruhns, Caitlin Crews, Maisey Yates, Susan Stephens, Nicole Flockton and Jackie Ashenden–as well as well-known blogger Sarah Wendell from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books.
In another first, the signing was held on the Saturday evening of the conference. This resulted in our best attendance yet, something that we weren’t expecting. In all we had 160 romance readers register to attend the signing. As usual the largest portion of these were RWA delegates, but we also had a good number of general public attendees.
The timing did mean that we had only a little over an hour to set up the signing room, so it was a mad rush to get everything ready in time. And, as usual, there was a queue forming well before the start time.
Despite the mad rush we were ready to open the signing right on time at 5.00 pm.
The room was soon packed, with the longest queue (of course!) being for Julia Quinn.
Once again we had fabulous door prizes–boxes full of books and other items donated by the attending authors–along with a special prize for the winner of the signature hunting competition. Congratulations to these winners.
We have also brought back with us a copy of the souvenir booklet that has been signed by all the attending authors (with thanks to Kimberley for collecting the signatures). We will be giving this booklet away to an ARRA member who was not at the signing. If you were unable to make the signing, leave a comment telling us why and you will go in the draw. (The giveaway is now closed. The winner was Lyn W.)
Our thanks to those who volunteered to help with setting up and running the event–it was greatly appreciated. An enormous thank you to Kerry Stewart of UWA University Co-op Bookshop, who did an outstanding job as the bookseller at the event. Our thanks also to Harlequin Australia for supplying books for their authors.
Planning has already started for the next signing event …
