ARRC2013: Lady Jane’s Salon comes to Australia
Founded in February 2009, Lady Jane’s Salon™ is New York City’s first—and to date, only—monthly romance fiction reading series. My co-founders and I launched the Salon to fill a niche, a need—and quickly realised we were sating a hunger—the hunger for happily-ever-after endings and fairytales come true.
Modeled in spirit on the literary salons of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Lady Jane’s provides guest authors, patrons, industry professionals and members of the media the opportunity to meet, mingle, read aloud, and discuss great romance reads in a free-flowing forum. At Lady Jane’s, we don’t have ‘Q&As’, we have conversations. We don’t have coffee, we have cocktails, or ‘mocktails’ as our guests prefer. The Salon takes place in the evening at a wine bar, lounge, or coffee house and typically includes four guest authors and a break to allow attendees to chat with authors.

As we approach our fourth anniversary, we are enormously honoured to have hosted some of the luminaries of romance fiction—Eloisa James, Sabrina Jeffries, Marjorie M Liu, and Suzanne Brockmann to name but a few—as well as an exciting array of fresh and debut voices. Our diverse guests span the spectrum of the genre from traditional historical and contemporary romance to novels that cross over to science fiction and futuristic, fantasy and steampunk, inspirational and GLBT romance.
In challenging those outside the genre to reconsider what ‘romance’ is, we have received media coverage in The New York Post and Time Out New York, as well as an array of romance fiction blogs and publications, notably RT BOOK Reviews magazine. Most recently, Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker, Laurie Kahn filmed us as part of her Popular Romance Project. You can view the less-than-four-minute film short here.
Since our genesis in NYC, we have grown our salon family to include four satellites in Denver, CO, Raleigh-Durham, NC, Naperville, IL (Chicago area), and San Diego, CA. Each Lady Jane’s follows our national model of donating its net proceeds from admissions to a charity. Across salons, charities supported are: Women-in-Need.org, which helps formerly disadvantaged NYC women and children, including the victims of domestic violence, build positive, independent lives; the Shout Against the Whisper crusade against ovarian cancer; Hope House of Colorado, which provides outreach and support to teen mothers; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; and Celebrate Differences, a Chicago-area not-for-profit that supports individuals and children with disabilities. To learn more about our satellites, visit us here.
At the original NYC Lady Jane’s, we are frequently invited to ‘take our show on the road’ to romance conferences across the United States. We have held special event Lady Jane’s Salons at the RT BOOK Lovers’ Convention, the Liberty States Fiction Writers’ ‘Create Something Magical’ conference, and the New Jersey Romance Writers ‘Put Your Heart in a Book’ conference.
What we have never before done is take Lady Jane’s abroad!
ARRC2013 will be the first time ever that Lady Jane’s Salon™ will be held off US soil—and Her Ladyship couldn’t be more thrilled! Please join us on Friday, 1 March from 6 to 7 pm for a very special Lady Jane’s Salon preceding the ARRC2013 welcome reception at the Mercure Hotel in Brisbane.
Entry is open to all those who have a ticket to the welcome reception. (If you have already registered and didn’t buy a ticket for the welcome reception, you can contact Evelyn at firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange to add a ticket to your registration.)
We will be asking all those attending the Salon to bring along a gently used romance novel to donate. Proceeds from the Salon will go to Youngcare.
A cash bar will be open from 6 pm for Salon attendees. For those who purchased a drink ticket for the reception, that will start from 7 pm.
Guest authors will be announced soon. Fun times and refreshing romance fiction absolutely guaranteed!
