Author spotlight: Kandy Shepherd
A former journalist and magazine editor, Kandy Shepherd’s debut novel Love is a Four-Legged Word (Berkeley Sensation) was named the Australian Romance Readers Association’s Favourite Contemporary Romance for 2009. Kandy has been praised for her ‘strong comedic voice’. Her second novel was published in 2010. Kandy currently resides in the Blue Mountains.
Now we turn the spotlight on Kandy …
Have you attended one of ARRA’s events before?
Yes, the 2010 Awards Dinner in Sydney. It was a very exciting night as I won Favourite Contemporary Romance for Love is a Four-Legged Word—such a surprise, I wasn’t expecting it at all! It was a fabulous night—beautiful venue, wonderful food and awesome company. Taking home that elegant award was the icing on the cake.
I also attended the ARRA book signing at the RWA conference in Sydney and that was lots of fun. There’s nothing more exciting as an author than to meet enthusiastic readers!
What are you most looking forward to at ARRC2011?
I’m moderating the contemporary romance panel and taking part in the publishing panel—such a great chance to catch up with some of my favourite authors and publishing professionals. I’m also looking forward to the Awards Dinner as I am a finalist for both Favourite Contemporary Romance and Favourite Australian Author 2010 for Home is Where the Bark Is. But I’m most looking forward to meeting with readers.
What do you have coming up next?
My next book follows the story of one of the characters in my second book Home is Where the Bark Is. And yes there are some cute doggy characters! That’s all I can say at the moment.
Which of your books (or characters) is your favourite?
I’ll always have a special place reserved in my heart for Love is a Four-Legged Word as it marked a big turning point in my publishing career, selling to Penguin in New York after a long period of “nearly there” encounters with publishers. I also loved every minute of writing it (especially the scenes with Brutus the millionaire mutt…)
If you haven’t already tried Kandy’s books, here’s what to watch for:

Thanks Aimee!
Thanks for visiting, Vanessa, you were there right at the beginning of HOME IS WHERE THE BARK IS…
Thanks for your nice words about my books Helene. Brutus would love to have a photo of Zeus, to have in my pet gallery on my website–it would be wonderful if you could email me one!
Congrats Kandy!
Congratulations on your nominations, Kandy! I adore your millionaire mutt and Home Is Where the Bark Is. Can’t wait to read the follow-up.
Love love love your doggie stories, Kandy!! Brutus needs to meet Zeus who’s heard all about him and thinks being a millionaire beats hanging out at the beach:)
Thanks Barbara–it will be great to see you there. What a great idea to read one of every author’s books.
Hi Kandy
I enjoyed your first book and had hoped to have read your second before ARRC but it is getting so close now and I do need a bit of sleep… I am trying to read one of each author attending. Best of luck at the awards night and see you there
Barbara
Thanks Amy and Anna–I’m really looking forward to catching up with you both in Bondi.
Kandy, not long now. I’ve been working on my speech all morning. Such fun! Good luck in the awards – I was so excited when your wonderful Love is a Four-Legged Word won last year. Yay, you!
Hey Kandy – looking forward to our contemporary panel and catching up with you at Bondi.
