Tough Customer by Sandra Brown

Release date: October 2010

The scene is set. The stalker is following and he makes his prey panic at the thought he can get to her at any time. This is the setting of Ms Brown’s latest suspense book, Tough Customer.

Caroline King needs Dodge Hanley. He is a former policeman who can help her with her problem. He is also a past love and him she totally trusts to get the job done. Her daughter, Berry, is being stalked and she needs him and her daughter needs to know her real father.

Caroline has managed her life well since she and Dodge were together. She has become successful but someone wants to destroy her greatest treasure.

Dodge Hanley currently works as an investigator for his lawyer friend. He comes running when Caroline calls as he has never forgotten her. He managed to destroy her love for him when he slept with another woman even to the point of saying it was part of his undercover role. He only saw his daughter the day she was born. He will get to meet her now that she is older but there is a stalker following her every move. Dodge needs to stop the stalker but he also doesn’t want his daughter to know who and what her real father is.

This was an interesting set-up as Dodge is the one who changes the most. He is able to overcome his fears and find a second chance with Caroline, or perhaps not. Before he can he has to confront his fears and does so admirably. Dodge does what he can to hold back his feelings but does fall victim to them. He does have some other bad habits, ones which Caroline doesn’t approve of, but he can’t break them. His needs are reflected in these bad habits.

A second romance thread is that of Berry and Ski Nyland. Berry is being stalked and Ski is the investigating officer. At first he is reluctant to allow Dodge to assist until he understands that Dodge has a vested interest and is actually a very good investigator.

At the end of her ordeal, I did like that Berry allowed herself some self-analysis not just the ‘why me’ but the life changing type analysis that helps people to move forward especially after a trauma.

I enjoyed this read from Ms Brown.

Heather, I’m a fan from days-gone-by and your review reminded me that I’ve not read a Sandra Brown in years (possibly more like decades!) and I really must rectify that.
