Feature Book: Explosive Eighteen
Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich
When I opened this book and saw that the opening scene had Stephanie Plum coming back from Hawaii my first thought was ‘Oh, COME ON!’. Seriously? We don’t get to read about the holiday? Ripped off!
I only had to read a little further, however, before little clues about the happenings in Hawaii started to emerge. What is that mysterious tan line? Why are Morelli and Ranger both sporting cuts and bruises? Why won’t Stephanie talk about it? The story does eventually emerge throughout the book and it serves to keep both the other characters and readers guessing. Let’s just say it was a holiday as only Stephanie could manage.
Meanwhile Stephanie has picked up another problem on the plane ride home. Or rather someone gave her one. And before she knows it she has FBI agents (both fake and real), a dangerous Somalian national and a strangely persistent hairdresser all following her around trying to find out what she knows. Problem is Stephanie doesn’t have what they want, and of course they don’t believe her.
Other problems are mounting as well. According to Lula it is because Stephanie has lost her juju—no doubt caused by the holiday she won’t speak of—and it certainly seems that nothing is going right for Stephanie on many fronts. I’m not going to go into any details, because there are too many moments I could accidentally spoil for readers. Suffice it to say she manages some new and inventive ways to totally screw up.
Despite my misgivings after Smokin’ Seventeen, I ended up really enjoying this book. Once Stephanie gets her mojo going she surprises us all by dealing with the myriad of problems in a fairly efficient (if slightly illogical) manner. I’m not going to comment on Stephanie’s amorous encounters except to say that at least she’s doing some introspection and does seem to care about how it affects others. Particular highlights in Explosive Eighteen were Lula’s new catchword (I smiled every time she said it), as well as her new firepower; the particularly impressive way Stephanie took care of her Somalian stalker (and the way everyone reacts to it); the love potion subplot; and even the way the story ended, although a bit cliffhanger-ish, still made me smile. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for Nineteen.

I never get tired of these novels…but have yet to read/get a copy of ‘Explosive Eighteen’.
I’ve just finished Sizzling Seventeen and am DESPERATE to read this next one! Good to hear it came good for you in the end
I so wish I got this one to review! I have loved every Stephanie Plum novel, including the ‘between numbers’ ones.
There’s something so satisfying about reading any of the Stephanie Plum “numbers” books and knowing that you’re going to cosy up with a deliciously madcap heroine, TWO 10/10 alpha males and an insane support cast. Can’t wait to get my mits on Explosive Eighteen. I wonder what nineeteen will be… Naughty Nineteen, Nutty Nineteen…?
I recently read Sizzling Seventeen and always surprise myself that I’m not sick of these book yet. Very much looking forward to the movie. Will they make movies for all the books, I wonder? Maybe not – drat!
Love the review! Now I really want to read it!
I have not read a lot of Janet Evanovich, but your review reminded me of why I like her work.

Oh Natalie – I CANNOT WAIT for the movie either
This series has maintained my couresty for years. I can’t get over how much I enjoy each book. If when I wanted more from the story lines, the next book never left me wanting. I too can’t wait for the movie. I can’t wait to see my favorite story a new way. Thanks for the review, this Eightteen is so on my book list. Can’t wait. Thanks!
I got hooked on Stephanie from the first page of ‘One for the Money.’ Really looking forward to seeing the movie. I just hope Katherine Heigl does a fabulous job of playing Stephanie!! (And the lads playing Morelli and Ranger better measure up too!!)
Explosive Eighteen sounds fabulous – I’m always amazed that JE manages to come up with fresh ideas. Love it.
I was wondering whether to bother with 18, but you’ve tempted me. I shall have to find out what happened in Hawaii.
Well written review! thanks
I haven’t read the last couple of Plum books – it lost some of the magic once she’d done the deed with Ranger for me, but this one sounds so tempting. Off to 1-click and download…
thanks for the review Debbie….. I must be the only one who hasn’t read any of Janets books… have heard people talking about this series but have yet to buy one

I haven’t read any either Barbara. I missed them when they first came out and now I’m not sure if I should go back and start them. Though this one does sound interesting and funny.
